Well, probably not… but according to Obama his Uncle was among the first American troops to liberate Auschwitz during WWII. The only problem with that story is that Auschwitz was liberated not by Americans, but by the Soviets. The Red Army moved in and liberated those at Auschwitz on Jan. 27, 1945. In fact the first camp liberated by American troops was not until the spring of 1945.
However, Obama stated:
I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps.
Does Obama have trouble with History or is there a bigger issue here? Could he be campaigning from the Clinton play book? Or perhaps is this the Al Gore “I invented the Internet” strategy? Facts were confused, locations and armies mixed up. Even the relatives relation was slightly manipulated to make the ‘uncle’ appear to have closer ties to Obama himself. When in fact the individual was one of Obama’s parent’s uncles. Not his.
According to the Obama campaign:
Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II – especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald. Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically.
Hmm, well mistakes can be made. I am glad he his proud of his Family and their military history.
